Sight Seeing

Just a short distance away from Ammouliani lies Mount Athos, home to twenty monasteries and various other monastic institutions. Known as the Autonomous Monastic State, only men are permitted to enter this sacred land in accordance with the Abaton rule and monastic traditions. The peninsula of Athos, officially named Mount Athos since 1045, has been inhabited by groups of ascetics as early as 843. In 963 A.C., the first monastery of Great Lavra was established by Saint Athanasius on this historic peninsula.
